The City of Kutina is the most important urban and business centre of Moslavina, the region occupying the central part of Republic of Croatia. Moslavina, as a separate region extends over three administrative units, those of Sisak-Moslavina (for its larger part), Bjelovar-Bilogora and Zagreb counties. It is bounded by rivers: the Česma in the west, the Ilova and Pakra in the east, the Lonja in the south and Moslavačka Gora Mountain in the north. Its relief is distinguished by a large plateau in the Lonja and Sava basin and the lonely Mount Moslavačka Gora, a schist mountain situated between the Sava and the Drava basins. The area of Moslavačka Gora is about 1350 km2. It is rich in granite and oil and gas fields. The elevation is 489 m at the peak (Humka), and 49 m at the foot. The elevation of Kutina is 149 meters.

The Location of Kutina in Republic of Croatia

The construction of roads was crucial to the growth of this region. It started with the construction of the so-called old road (Božjakovina – Ivanić-Kloštar – Križ – Kutina - Slavonski Brod) in the mid 18th C. It connects Pannonian regions through Slavonia, Moslavina and Zagreb with Adriatic ports. The gravitation toward that road contributed to the importance of Kutina and the whole region of Moslavina.

In addition to its location on the Sava river basin communication line, Kutina owes its growth to the vicinity of Zagreb, the capital of Croatia and the most important industrial centre in the country. Kutina is the leader in business, culture and communications in the Moslavina region.

The construction of roads influenced linking and growth of business activities. The route of the D4 GP Bregana (Slovenian border) – Zagreb – Slavonski Brod – Bajakovo (Yugoslav border) state road goes through the plains of Moslavina. It is transversally joined (heading south) with the D 36 (D4) Popovača – Sisak – Pokupsko – Karlovac (D1) state road, which goes further to the Adriatic and (heading north) over Kutina – Garešnica – Grubišno Polje to the Podravina Motorway at Virovitica. It is also linked with the D 45 (D5) V. Zdenci – Garešnica – Kutina state road going to Hungary and Eastern Europe.

New possible development prospects have come up by joining an arm of the Dugo Selo – Kutina – Novska – Banova Jaruga – Pakrac railway to the existing railway lines. Railway communications of Croatia with Europe (based on the European Agreement on Main International Railway Lines and European Agreement on Important International Combined Transport Lines and Related Installations) is made over nine railway corridors. Out of those, the international Pan European (Salzburg – Ljubljana – Zagreb – Belgrade – Niš – Skopje – Večes – Thessalonica) 10th corridor is of extraordinary importance for Croatia and it also transits Moslavina and Kutina.

To be concluded, Kutina has a very favourable location in terms of longitudinal (East Europe – Central Europe – South Europe) and transverse (West Europe – Central Europe – Near East) communication lines.

Kutina’s location and communications provide opportunity for development of a number of processing industries, services in manufacturing industry, tourism, etc.). Having major Croatian towns Sisak, Daruvar and Bjelovar, the centres of development in their respective regions, in its neighbourhood, as well as being in the gravitation zone of the Zagreb region, makes communications extremely significant for the development prospects of Moslavina and Kutina.
